What happens in a first session

Walking into your first counselling session can feel a bit daunting, especially if you're not sure what to expect. The good news is that it's usually much gentler than people imagine. Here's what typically happens, so you can arrive feeling more at ease.

Before you arrive

You'll usually book by phone, email or online. You might be asked to fill in a short consent form with your contact details and a few basics. There's no need to dress up or bring anything. If your session is online, find a quiet spot where you feel comfortable.

The first few minutes

We'll start with a warm welcome and a chance to settle in. Your counsellor will explain how sessions work, including confidentiality, how long we'll meet for, and what happens if you need to reschedule. This is a good time to ask any questions you have.

The conversation

Next, you'll be invited to share what brought you in. You can start wherever you like. You don't need the right words or a neat story. Your counsellor may ask a few gentle questions to understand your situation, what you've tried already, and what you'd like to be different. You set the pace, and you can pause or skip anything you're not ready to talk about.

What you won't be asked to do

You won't be judged, rushed or told what to do. You won't have to relive your hardest moments in the first session. And you don't have to cry, though it's perfectly okay if you do.

Wrapping up

Towards the end, we'll talk about how the session felt and whether you'd like to meet again. There's no pressure to decide on the spot. Some people leave feeling lighter, others feel a bit tired or thoughtful. All of that is normal.

Common worries

  • I don't know what to say. That's okay. We'll find a starting point together.
  • My problems aren't big enough. If it matters to you, it matters.
  • Will you tell anyone what I say? What you share is confidential. The exceptions are rare, such as when someone's safety is at risk, and your counsellor will explain these at the start.

Taking the first step

Booking that first session takes courage. If you'd like to book, or just ask a question first, I'd be glad to hear from you.
